Description
14 and 14A Tuesday Market Place is a house that has been converted into offices. It has origins dating back to the late 16th century but is mainly from the mid-18th century. The building is constructed of rendered and pebbledashed brick, with a plain tiled roof on the front slope and slate on the rear. It is two storeys tall and features five bays.
The central entrance has a double door surround with two panelled doors, flanked by fluted Corinthian pilasters. Above this is a blank frieze beneath a segmental dentilled pediment. On either side of the entrance are two late 19th-century two-light cross casement windows. The first floor has two similar windows, with the eastern (right) windows set lower. The first floor also displays late 19th-century applied timber-framing and decorative medallions at intervals. A moulded timber eaves cornice runs below the gabled roof.
Internally, there is a gable-end stack to the east and a central ridge stack. The gable head of a cross wing is visible over the ridge between the stacks. This wing features stone quoins at the rear and is constructed of rubble. The west aspect has three bays of sash windows on both storeys, with glazing bars and gauged skewback arches, except for the lower left window, which has lost its skewback. There are various other additions and extensions from the 19th century and later that extend in different directions.
Inside, there is an open-string staircase at the east end, featuring two circular section balusters on turned bases for each tread. The staircase has a ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail and a matching dado rail. The interior has only been partly inspected.
