Description
The Trader Building, located at 21 Tower Street in King's Lynn, is a house that may have originally served as a shop. It dates from the late 15th century and underwent restoration and alterations in 1983. The building features a timber-framed structure with brick elements and a slate roof. It has two storeys, with the brick ground floor rebuilt in the 1980s, including a glazed display front added at that time.
The building has kneelers that support a bressumer for the jetty over exposed joists. The upper floor is close-studded and includes two arched braces with cement render infill. In the center of this floor, there is a four-light timber mullioned window with a king mullion. The roof is gabled, and there is a blocked and truncated internal gable-end stack on the south side.
Inside, a large chamfered bridging beam runs north-south and has mortices for arched braces. A mortice at the north end suggests that the north wall has been relocated to the south. The interior also features late 20th-century partitioning and details. The roof consists of three tie beams that support rectangular section crown posts, with the outer pair having straight braces to the ties. The crown purlin is arch-braced to this pair, and there are collars and two tiers of butt purlins, with the upper tier having been renewed. Additionally, there are two niches in the south wall and a fireplace.
