Description
26 and 27 South Quay are a pair of houses with origins dating back to the 17th century. The facade was rebuilt in the mid-19th century and the properties were divided into two by 1874. They were damaged by bombs in 1942 and subsequently rebuilt in 1948. The buildings are constructed of gault brick and feature a sloping felt roof. They stand three storeys high and have a five-window range. The ground floor is rendered and scored to imitate ashlar blocks. There is a six-panelled door located to the right of centre, framed by a doorcase with unfluted Doric columns that support a plain entablature and hood. To the right of the door is one six-over-six unhorned sash window, with three more to the left. Each of the two upper floors has five six-over-six unhorned sash windows beneath gauged skewback arches. The buildings have a parapet and a stack on the north side. At the rear, there is a three-storey wing that is rendered. Inside, the principal rooms feature plaster round arches, and the first-floor front room has a cornice with modillions and rosettes. The front rooms on the upper floors are now connected with No. 25 to the north.
