Description
9 and 11 Tolhouse Street is a pair of former shops built in 1823. The buildings are made of red brick and have a pantiled roof. They stand three storeys high and feature a three-window range. The central entrance has a six-panelled door that leads to the upper floors, flanked by fluted reveals with reeded bowed pilasters on either side and a similar frieze above.
To the right, No. 9 has a mid-19th century plate-glass shop front, while No. 11 on the left has a late 19th century plate-glass shop front, both with central entrances. The first floor has two 8/8 sash windows flanking a 6/6 sash window, all without horns, set in flush frames and topped with gauged skewback arches. The second floor features similar sashes but with glazing bars arranged as 4/8, 3/6, and 4/8. The gabled roof has internal gable-end stacks on both the north and south sides. The rear of the building includes a full-height outshut under a catslide roof, fitted with a mix of sashes and casements, mostly from the 20th century. The interior has little of interest on the ground floor and was not inspected further.
