Description
The Port and Haven Commissioners' Offices, built in 1909 by Olley & Haward, is located at 21 South Quay in Great Yarmouth. This building features a red brick structure with a knapped Quarry and Quaternary flint facade, dressed with Lincolnshire Limestone, and has slate roofs.
The exterior showcases a three-storey facade that culminates in a gable facing the street, with a three-window arrangement. The central entrance bay is narrow, topped with a hood supported by brackets and an arched head. There are arched windows on either side of the entrance. Above the entrance, a frieze displays the legend: "Port and Haven Commissioners' Offices." The first floor has three cross casements with keystones set within segmental heads. The attic storey features a tripartite casement, with the central window having a segmental arch above it. The gable-head is made of chequered stone and flint, rising to an arched apex that displays the date 1909 and a relief representation of a steamship. The main gable has north and south gable-end stacks, while the south return wall is constructed of 16th-century brick.
Inside, the ground floor front offices include glass and timber partitions, which feature the cash office for the payment of port dues. The staircase is designed in a Jacobean style, with a closed string, splat balusters, and moulded square newels. The first-floor front room serves as the boardroom, featuring small-framed panelling and a ribbed plaster ceiling with simple geometric patterns.
