Description

The College of Art and Design, built in 1912 by JW Cockrill, is a school of art located in Great Yarmouth. It features a steel frame with red brick cladding and terracotta details, standing two storeys high with a basement. The east-facing facade has a three-window range, with polygonal turrets at the corners that have terracotta panels marking the divisions of the storeys and terracotta sills beneath the windows. The central entrance is deeply recessed and includes doors beneath a Diocletian window, all set within a coffered round-arched recess. This arch is supported by a triglyph frieze and entablature on four unfluted Roman Doric columns. There are five-light leaded cross casements on either side of the entrance and three on the first floor. The pilasters flanking the central bay rise to a raised parapet, which is topped with bulbous terracotta finials. The north side of the building features a four-window range, with each window divided by polygonal turrets that have similar terracotta details and finials. Inside, there is a staircase with wrought-iron balusters supporting a rounded handrail. The building also includes wrought-iron railings along the east and north sides, adorned with minor Art Deco scrolled finials.
