Description
The ruins of the Church of St Mary, a parish church, date back to the 12th century and were altered in the 14th century. There were bequests made for the repair of the tower in 1459, and the nave and chancel were re-roofed in 1524 and 1526, respectively. The remains include a west tower and fragments of the north nave wall. The circular two-stage tower features a 14th-century octagonal belfry stage made of flint and some brick. The north and south windows of the ringing chamber are partially blocked. The lower stage has an arched west window, and the belfry windows have brick jambs, indicating that only alternate facets had windows. A triple hollow chamfered brick tower arch opens into the nave, while there is a mutilated north nave door opening and, further east, the remains of one high window.
