Description

Cotenham Farm House is a farmhouse with a rear section dating from the 17th century. It was extended to the south in the early 18th century and to the southwest in the 19th century. The building features red brick, colourwashed brick, and pantiles. The main north-south range has three windows, with a single-storey lean-to on the northern side and a taller southern range that includes two east wings, one and a half storeys high, and a double-gabled south facade that is two storeys with attics. Each gable has two windows, and there are 19th-century cross windows with timber casements. A sash window with a semi-circular head is located in the right-hand gable. The entrance door, which has six panels, is situated in the south wall of the east wing and features a fanlight and a timber doorcase with an architrave and shallow cornice. The rear range includes two 20th-century gabled brick porches and three-light casement windows with segmental brick arches. The roof has two wedge dormers with segmental heads, and two-light windows with wrought iron casements and leaded lights. The north gable has a parapet with brick kneelers and an end stack, while the south wing has an axial stack and the northwest wing has an end stack. A flint plinth is visible in the north gable of the lean-to. Inside, there is an open brick fireplace with a timber bressumer and ovolo moulded beams in the kitchen. The 17th-century tie beams show evidence of a possible former timber frame, and the roof features wind-braced butt purlins.
