Description
The stable at Woolsey's Farm is a mid-18th century structure with 20th-century alterations. It is built of red brick, featuring randomly placed vitrified bricks, and sits on a flint plinth. The roof is thatched. The building has two storeys, with a blocked stable doorway on the north wall, an inserted window opening, and two half-lozenge shaped ventilators made of honeycomb brickwork. The rear elevation includes a single-storey lean-to outshut, which is set on a herringbone brickwork plinth, and has central stable doors leading to both the stable's rear wall and the outshut.
Inside, the stable has a three-bay double butt purlin roof with wind braces on the lower purlins. The principal rafters have morticed collars that are not aligned with the tie beams. Most of the stable fittings have been replaced by 20th-century steel pens, but there is still a ledge for mangers along one gable wall, feed hatches from the hay loft against the gable walls, and holes for hay rack staves in the ceiling joists, indicating that horses were stalled facing the gables. The loft floor is supported by a chamfered spine beam with ogee stops. Tack pegs in the outshut suggest it served as a tack room.
Additionally, a low brick wall extends from the south-west corner of the building to connect with the adjacent barn. This stable is significant for its evidence of 18th-century horse stalling practices and the development of separate tack room provisions. It is part of a larger integrated farmstead that includes the farmhouse, barn, shelter sheds, and coach house, representing a rare surviving example of 18th-century farmstead planning.
