Description

Woolsey's Farm Barn, attached cattle shelters, and yard walls date from the early to mid-18th century, with alterations around 1770 and mid-19th century additions. The structure is built of red brick, some of which is vitrified, and sits on a flint plinth. The roofs are thatched, except for the offshoots which have plain tiles.

The barn is composed of two sections aligned east-west, with mid-19th century shelter sheds extending southwards, enclosing two cattle yards. The north wall of the barn supports a lean-to outshut. The barn features a doorway on the south wall flanked by added buttresses. The western part of the barn is older and incorporates vitrified brick, while the eastern section is made of red brick similar to that used in the 1771 heightening of the farmhouse. Each half of the barn has a double doorway leading to a threshing floor. The eastern section has slit breathers, while the western part includes a lozenge-shaped panel of honeycomb brickwork.

Inside, the barn has a roof structure of ten bays, with tie beams that are not connected to the principal rafters. It features a double butt-purlin roof with wind braces on the upper purlins. The eastern part of the barn was converted into a cart horse stable in the mid-19th century and retains three stalls across the gable wall, complete with mangers, stall dividers, and tying rings. The northern lean-to serves as a tack room. To the south of the barn are the shelter sheds with hipped roofs, and the eastern range has a flint rear wall. The yards are formed by the sheds and enclosed by a wall to the south. This barn, the shelter sheds, and the enclosure walls are part of a cohesive and notably complete group that includes the farmhouse, coach house, stable, and cartshed.
