Description

This is an 18th-century larder, located underground immediately east of the east facade of Oxnead Hall. It is a brick structure, square in plan, and covered by a tall, four-sided domical vault. A sloping passage leads to the larder, and it is vaulted with a segmental barrel vault. The original entrance, which likely connected directly to the house, has been destroyed and access is now via a manhole. The larder’s interior features wide central recesses beneath segmental arches, flanked by narrower recesses containing shelf housings. The top of the vault has been rebuilt and includes a vent. A 19th-century repair is also noted.
