Description
The Dog Public House is a public house located on Holt Road in Horsford, dating from the early 17th century and later. It is built of colourwashed brick and features a pantiled roof with a 'T'-shaped plan. The main two-storey range runs along an east-west axis and has three windows, with a higher two-storey cross wing to the east and a 1½ storey extension to the west. There are lean-to extensions on both the north and south sides.
The east facade of the cross wing has a blocked 17th-century window with a rendered pediment and quoining, which has been altered to include a 19th-century four-light casement. Above this, there are two former openings, with the right-hand one now featuring a 20th-century casement. The northern gable wall includes a half-glazed 19th-century door with a 20th-century porch, and above it is a 19th-century three-light casement with a segmental brick arch. The building has stepped gables, moulded brick kneelers, and an end stack on the south side.
The two-storey range and the 1½ storey extension to the west may contain 17th-century fabric. The north facade has a 20th-century lean-to extension and 19th-century three-light casement windows with segmental brick arches, brick dentil eaves, parapet gables, and a central axial stack. Inside, there are early 17th-century stepped and chamfered transverse beams in both wings, an open brick fireplace with a timber bressumer, and a butt purlin roof in the cross wing.
