Description

This listing describes two pairs of gate piers and attached railings located immediately southeast of Number 200 Buxton Road. These structures date from the late 19th century and serve as the entrance to the site of Spixworth Hall.

The gate piers are made of red brick with stone dressings and rendered finials. The inner and outer piers are octagonal, with the taller inner pier standing about 15 feet high and set back from the road. The outer pier is slightly shorter and positioned closer to the road. Each pier is set on an octagonal red brick plinth that features a chamfered stone base and a moulded stone coping. The finials on the piers are rendered in an octagonal ogee shape, with a moulded base and a brattished base on the gate pier finial.

The iron railings, which are about 5 feet tall, are mounted on a red brick plinth that is approximately 1 foot high, with plain stone coping at the top. The railings alternate between fleur-de-lys designs and shorter, pointed intermediate spears, with all shafts set diagonally. There are five principal fleur-de-lys railings that are slightly taller than the others, with their shafts set square and secured to the rear with iron stays.

An identical arrangement of piers and railings mirrors this setup on the south side of the entrance, with the distance between the outer piers on the north and south sides being about 90 feet. Spixworth Hall was demolished around 1955.
