Description
Ringland School and the attached schoolmaster's house were built around 1873 for G Duckett Berney of Morton Hall. The buildings are constructed of red brick with some stone dressings and feature a slate roof in two shades that create a diaper pattern. The gables are brick-coped with kneelers and finials, and there are ornamental brick stacks with single and paired octagonal flues topped with stars. The design is in the Tudor style, characterized by diagonal buttresses and elaborate brickwork, much of which comes from the nearby Costessey brickworks. The structure has a complex plan, with the house located at the rear right. It is two stories tall, with the main range displaying two projecting gables that feature 3- and 5-light windows with cusped lights and hoodmoulds; the right gable projects further and has a bellcote on top. There is a 3-light window to the far left and a Tudor-arched doorway situated between the gables. The right side includes the schoolhouse at the rear, which has a doorway in a porch and similar 2- and 3-light windows. The rear of the building has a 20th-century single-storey extension. This is a finely detailed example of school architecture from the period.
