Description

The Vines is a former farmhouse dating to the late Medieval period. It was raised and refurbished in the 17th century, faced in the 18th century, and extended in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed and faced with brick, with some flint in the gable end, and has a pantile roof. The original design was of a lobby entrance type, although it now has modern lean-to extensions to the front and rear.

The house is two storeys high with an attic. The east facade has a 20th-century lean-to along its northern half. The southern half features two 19th-century, three-light ground-floor windows set beneath shallow two-centred arches. A plain platband runs along the facade. The first floor has two 18th-century mullion windows of three and four lights, with metal casements. The south gable end includes an extension of the platband, galletted flintwork, and an internal stack. The rear facade has various modern extensions, leaving only one bay visible to the south. A reused 17th-century, three-light mullion window with ovolo moulded details is located on the ground floor, now within a conservatory. Other rear windows include a 20th-century four-light window, two 20th-century two-light casement windows to the first floor, and a 20th-century flat-roofed dormer.

A 17th-century axial stack, located off-centre, has two interconnecting angled shafts. Internally, there are inserted 17th-century floors, with ogee and nicked chamfer stops to the principal joists and tie beams. The roof is of 17th-century construction, with collar and butt-purlin details.
