Description
The Pumphouse is a disused structure built in the early 19th century, originally used for raising water to the gardens of Clermont Hall. It is constructed from limewashed brick with some stone dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a square plan and is a single storey high. The three-bay facade includes a doorway flanked by windows, all with two-centred arches that have raised keystones and imposts made of stone. The eastern window retains a two-light Gothic frame, and there is a boarded door beneath the pyramidal roof. Inside, the machinery is intact, featuring an iron breast shot waterwheel that drives a three-throw pump designed by Joseph Bramah. The Pumphouse is listed as Grade II* due to the rarity of the Bramah pump.
