Description
The Grange is a former rectory located in Great Cressingham, primarily built in the late 18th century, with a service wing that shows some signs of an earlier structure. The building is constructed of gault brick, with some red brick used in the service wing, and features slate roofs. It has an irregular H-shaped plan, with the main rooms situated in the south block. The structure is two storeys tall, with a 2½ storey service wing.
The south facade consists of five bays of sash windows with glazing bars, all set beneath skewback arches. The central bay features margin glazed French windows, while the first-floor windows have shaped blind boxes. A moulded wooden cornice with a classical dentil course runs along the top, and the roof is hipped.
The east facade, which serves as the entrance, is recessed between the north and south blocks and has three bays of sash windows with glazing bars beneath skewback arches. There is a 19th-century gabled porch in Gothic style, featuring a four-centred entrance arch and a parapet gable with moulded brick coping. The west facade includes an early 19th-century balcony on the first floor, adorned with wrought iron railings and margin glazed French windows.
The irregular north facade has two sash windows with wide glazing bars on the ground floor, three additional sash windows, and a two-light casement window on the top floor. Inside, there is a fine quarter-turn staircase with a landing, likely from the mid-18th century. The staircase features an open string with shaped tread ends, three turned balusters per tread with square knops, and a wide handrail that opens onto a channelled newel. The interior also includes a simple dado with channelled pilasters and a handrail.
