Description
Kilverstone Hall is a country house that dates back to the early 17th century, was remodeled in the early 18th century, and rebuilt in 1913. The building is constructed of flint with gault brick dressings and some ashlar, topped with a tiled roof. The north facade features a five-gabled range, with a three-storey porch at its centre. The house has two to three storeys throughout, and the ground and first floors showcase much of the original flint work, reflecting a Jacobean style from 1913. To the right of the porch, there are two waterheads dating to 1620. The facade is ruggedly symmetrical, and there is an additional wing at the rear built in 1928, designed in a similar style. The gabled skyline adds to the overall character of the house.
Inside, the inner porch door features a seven-vaned fanlight from around 1725, which leads into a panelled hall with a carved cornice, also from the 18th century. A dog-leg staircase was relocated during the 1913 rebuild. The drawing room can be accessed through a panelled passage that includes a fine shell hood cupboard, with door jambs decorated with bead and scroll motifs. The drawing and dining rooms, which is now a library, remain largely unaltered and date to around 1725. The drawing room contains a white marble fireplace with a 19th-century grate, along with a gilt cornice, doorcase, and some furnishings. The dining room features a fireplace with an alabaster panel depicting dancing and musical putti beneath a drapery border. Additionally, one three-light brick mullioned window from around 1620 remains in the service wing, although it is not in its original position.
