Description
The Church of St Andrew is a parish church located in Kilverstone. It dates back to the 12th century, with refurbishments in the 14th century and restoration carried out in 1906 by Boardman. The church is constructed of flint with stone quoins and has a plain tile roof. The structure includes a massive 12th-century round west tower that stands three storeys high, featuring a plain parapet with visible brick repairs. There is a 20th-century ground floor window on the west side, along with three simple round-headed slit windows in the ringing chamber. The belfry has four two-light windows, which are divided by octagonal or circular columns supporting round-headed arches, with remains of scalloped capitals.
The south porch and some exterior details are from the 20th century. The nave and chancel have two-light plate traceried windows, while the east window is a three-light window in the Decorated style. The south door, dating from the 12th century, is flanked by columns with foliate capitals and features square imposts along with zig-zag and roll decorations on the round arch.
Inside, the seating was reconfigured in 1857, with most of the remaining interior dating from 1906. The base of the Norman font has drop-leaf corners. A notable feature is the fine Royal Arms in plasterwork on the west wall, dated 1716 and coloured. The nave roof, constructed in the 20th century, is timber with collars to the principals supported by arched braces that spring from corbels through purlins. The chancel roof is similar but has moulded butt-purlins.
