Description

The Annex to the Romany Rye Hotel is a house built in the early 18th century, with changes made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick, partly rendered and colourwashed, and features pantiled roofs.

The building has two storeys and a two-window range. The east elevation is mostly hidden by a late 20th-century single-storey roofed passageway, leaving the facade unchanged. On the ground floor, there is a half-glazed two-panelled door flanked by a 3/6 unhorned sash window on the left and an 8/8 unhorned sash window on the right. A plat band runs along the first floor, which has a two-light 20th-century casement window on the left and a three-light 19th-century casement window on the right. The roof stacks have been removed.

The gable end facing the street (south) features two 2/2 horned sash windows on the ground floor and one 2/2 unhorned sash window on the first floor, with a drip course at the eaves level and a single fixed light in the attic. The gable also has cusped roof bargeboards. The west elevation includes a central two-storey staircase outshut beneath a catslide roof, with a 20th-century panelled door and a 6/6 unhorned sash window. The rest of the west elevation is fitted with metal 20th-century casement windows.

Inside, the first floor has three chamfered bridging beams and doors with H hinges, along with a 20th-century staircase. The Annex to the Romany Rye Hotel is part of a group of buildings around St Nicholas' church. This building was previously listed twice, and the duplicate record was removed from the list on January 10, 2019.
