Description

The Olde Thatche Shoppe is a manorial house, later divided into two cottages and now used as a shop and single dwelling. It dates back to the 15th century and has undergone significant alteration since its original construction. The building is timber framed with a mixture of rendered lath and plaster, clay lump, and brick, set on a brick and flint plinth. It has a thatched roof. The original plan was likely that of an open hall.

The building is two storeys high. A shop entrance is located on the right side, featuring a late 20th-century door set between bow windows. There are two casement windows on the ground floor and four under the eaves, dating from the early 1980s, all within original openings. The gabled roof has a ridge stack to the left of centre above a blocked door. A pantiled outshut is located on the right side. The south gable is clad with weatherboarding. A full-length, flat-topped extension to the ground floor was added in the late 20th century to the rear. The first-floor windows at the front have been renewed. A 19th-century, four-light vertically mullioned window has replaced a 17th-century insertion on the right side.

Inside, much of the original timber frame remains. A sitting room and dining room were reconstructed in the late 16th century. Features include visible wall studs, wall plates, and ceiling beams, the latter with tongue stops. The sitting room fireplace has been partly rebuilt in the 20th century but retains some original brickwork and a bressummer inscribed "1580 - E.R. - $L.". The roof has tie beams on arched braces, thin Queen posts and collars, and a single purlin clasped between the collar and principals at the rear and under the collar at the front. A winder staircase is located behind the stack.
