Description
The Thatched Cottage is a cottage dating from the mid 16th century and later. It is constructed with a timber frame and rendered wattle and daub on a brick plinth, topped with a thatched roof. The building has a T-shaped plan with a cross wing to the right. The main range is one storey high with a dormer attic. There is a door to the right, which is sheltered by a flat hood supported by quatrefoil punched brackets. To the left, there are two 3-light casements beneath two gabled dormers featuring plain tiles and leaded casements. The gabled roof has a central ridge stack.
At the rear, there is an opposing door, one casement under a hood, and two eaves dormers with casements. The cross wing is partially obscured by a large 20th-century lean-to porch on the west side. There is one eaves dormer under the thatch and an external stack on the rear gable wall. The front gable has three casements, two of which are beneath hoods.
Inside, the cottage retains a complete timber frame, with beams that generally feature tongue stops. The main roof range has clasped tenoned butt purlins, and the frame includes bracing in the rear bedroom. Several doors have H hinges, and there is a rebuilt fireplace along with a particularly heavy bridging beam in the dining room.
