Description

Cornerways is a house dating from the 16th century, which was re-roofed and extended in 1640, as indicated by a plaster date on the rear wall. It features significant 18th century and 20th century extensions and repairs. The building has a rendered timber frame, with one colourwashed brick gable end and a pantile roof. It is two storeys high with an attic and has an irregular arrangement of windows. On the first floor, there are two 18th century three-light windows with metal casements, while the ground floor has two three-light casements from the 19th century. The front door is modern and off-centre. There are also two sloping dormers with metal casements. Above the back door, which has a simple gabled hood, is a recess with the date incised. There is one 18th century or early 19th century three-light window with a metal casement. The brick gable end likely dates from the 1640 remodelling. Later extensions to the side and rear are not of special interest. Inside, there are remains of three roof trusses with heavy scantling, indicating a 16th century date, along with ties and some surviving arched braces. The roof, probably from 1640, consists of about seven bays with collars, double sets of butt purlins, and windbracing. A cupboard contains a painting of a ship, likely from the 17th century. One room features 18th century raised and fielded panelling and an eared fire surround.
