Description

This row of four cottages, dating from the mid to late 17th century, features a rendered timber frame construction. The cottages have a steeply pitched pantile roof with gabled ends and two red brick axial stacks. Each cottage is one room deep, with the main room heated by back-to-back fireplaces in the two axial stacks, and narrow unheated service rooms on either side. There is a later outshut added to the right end, likely from the late 19th or 20th century.

The exterior is one storey with an attic and has a somewhat asymmetrical seven-window front. It includes 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars and four glazed doors. There are four small gabled dormers arranged symmetrically just above the eaves, also with two-light casements. The gable ends feature attic casements, while the rear has small two-light casements and old plank back doors, along with a weatherboarded rear outshut on the left.

Inside, the floors are supported by chamfered axial beams in each room, and most fireplaces have been blocked. The timber frame partitions between the rooms remain intact, and some wall framing and rafters are exposed, although the attics are ceiled. There are also some late 17th-century plank doors with wrought iron hinges. It is noted that the terrace may have originally been built as almshouses.
