Description

Martyrs Cottage is a former farmhouse dating from the early 16th century, with later alterations. The building features an apparent three-bay timber frame that was largely re-assembled around 1980, with brick nogging on the facade. One gable end is made of flint with brick quoins, and the roof is covered with pantiles. The cottage has two storeys and an attic, with scattered 20th-century casement windows and two boarded doors at the front.

At the rear, there are two four-light roll-moulded and hollow-chamfered mullion windows, along with one three-light plain-chamfered 17th-century mullion window. The gables retain parts of the original roof structure, featuring solid braces that rise to the collars to create arches. There is an off-centre axial stack and a rebuilt gable-end stack, as well as a 20th-century lean-to at the rear.

Inside, the ground floor has fireplaces with ashlar jambs and chamfered bressumers. The northwest room showcases very fine late-medieval roll-moulded beams, while other areas feature wide chamfers with simple run-out stops. The roof is a wedge-tenoned butt-purlin type, likely from the 18th or 19th century. It is believed, though without evidence, to be the birthplace of Thomas Bilney, the Protestant martyr.
