Description
Clay Cottage is a former farmhouse that dates back to the mid-17th century, with a rear extension added in 1709. The building features a rendered timber frame and a pantile roof, designed in a lobby-entrance type plan with a blocked doorway opposite the stack at the rear. It stands two storeys tall and has four modern ground floor pivot windows with glazing bars, along with three 19th-century first floor casement windows that also have glazing bars. The east gable-end includes one 18th-century three-light window with a metal casement and some leaded glazing, as well as a modern ground floor window with glazing bars. There is an 18th-century window on the rear facade, which has later glazing bars and a former metal casement. The rear extension has a colourwashed brick gable-end and features two two-light windows with single metal casements and some leaded glazing. The main block has an off-centre axial stack with interconnecting angled shafts and modern shallow pitched roofs. Inside, there is an original winding stair beside the stack with turned balusters. The frame retains surviving tie beams and bridging joists, which have stepped run-out chamfer stops.
