Description
Moffats and The White House is a large house originating from the late 17th century, which has been divided into two properties. It was formerly a school. The left side, known as Moffats, is built of red brick, while the right side, The White House, features painted brick. The building has two storeys and attics, topped with a parapet and a slate hipped roof.
The early 19th century road-facing elevation has five recessed 6/6-pane sash windows with gauged brick heads. The entrance elevation to Moffats, dating from the early 18th century, has a truncated gable end with two windows. The porch, added in the early 19th century, features a re-used Adam style columned surround, with fluted necking on the columns and a frieze adorned with acanthus swags. The entrance includes a moulded and fielded six-panel door.
Inside, behind the porch, there is a large early 18th century open well staircase, complete with barley twist balusters and newel posts. The White House has a doorcase with reused fluted Ionic pilasters and an extension added in the early to mid-19th century. A square ridge chimney stack exhibits late 17th century brickwork.
