Description
North Grove Lock, also known as Lock No. 71 on the Grand Union Canal, dates from around 1797 when it was originally part of the Grand Junction Canal, which became the Grand Union Canal following an amalgamation in 1919. The lock features dates of 1869 on the hinge of the south gate and 1881 on the hinge of the north gate, which may indicate repairs or components taken from other lock gates. It is constructed of brick with stone setts capping the revetment on the west side, and it has timber gates. There are also timber and iron bollards, likely cast in 1896 by the London and Lancashire Engineering Company. The lock measures 88 feet by 16 feet, designed to accommodate narrow boats in pairs. This structure is included for its group value with the nearby North Grove Lock House on Watford Road.
