Description

The Hollies is a house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with extensions made in the late 17th century or early 18th century and further alterations in the early 19th century. It has a timber frame that has been extended and cased in red brick, which is largely whitewashed. The roofs are tiled, except for the shallow pitched slate roof on the front range.

The original structure consists of two bays at the rear, with a taller two-bay addition and a new three-storey, three-window range added to the front, all featuring parallel roofs. The central entrance in the 19th-century front range has a rectangular fanlight and is recessed, with a simple porch supported by columns with fluted capitals. The windows include 16-pane sashes and 12-pane sashes on the second storey, all with slightly cambered gauged brick heads. There are end stacks and lean-to outshuts on the sides, with leaded casements on the left return.

The intermediate range has a lower gable end on the left and features two storeys and an attic. The ground floor has a horizontal sliding sash and a two-light casement, while the first floor has a horizontal sliding sash and the attic has a three-light leaded pane casement. A hipped wing at the back extends over a lower third parallel range. The building displays exposed jowled posts and clasped purlins, along with a 17th-century external stack that has a large offset and base in a one-storey outshut, which is hipped to the front and has a lean-to at the rear.

The rear elevation of the earliest range was likely the original front, featuring two storeys with an 18th-century brick casing. It includes an entrance and three ground floor casements, with two on the first floor, all fitted with 20th-century leaded lights. The eaves are dentilled. Queen Anne Cottage adjoins the rear left of the property. The interior has not been inspected.
