Description
The war memorial, located about 40 meters east of the Church of St. Mary in Rickmansworth, was built in 1921 by W. Reid Dick. It is constructed of ashlar and features three steps leading up to a large rectangular base that supports a slightly tapering pylon topped with a later pyramidal cap. On either side of the pylon are carved figures representing Grief, marked with the date 1914, and Victory, marked with the date 1918. The names of those who died in the war are inscribed on the memorial. Originally located at the western end of High Street, the memorial was moved to its current site in the 1960s, at which time a bronze statue of a lion and an eagle that once topped the monument was relocated elsewhere.
