Description

The Church of the Ascension is a parish church built in 1880, funded by a donation of £80 from W.H. Solly. It is constructed from pre-fabricated corrugated iron, with cream-painted walls set on a rendered brick plinth, and is designed in the Gothic Revival style. The church features a west porch, a four-bay nave, a southwest tower with a steeple, and a one-bay chancel with vestry outshuts. The gabled entrance porch has a pointed arched entrance and cusped finialed bargeboards. The west end includes a two-light Y-traceried window with a timber hood mould and wavy finialed bargeboards. The tower has a louvred trefoil-headed lancet window on the west side, an octagonal belfry with trefoil-headed louvred openings, and an octagonal spire topped with an elaborate iron finial. The nave is adorned with four lancet windows in chamfered timber surrounds on each side. The east window of the chancel features three lights with intersecting tracery and wavy bargeboards. There is a lean-to on the north side with a two-light window facing east and an entrance on the west side, and a smaller lean-to on the south side with an entrance on the east. Inside, the church is completely wood panelled and has a simple collar truss roof. The pointed chancel arch and wall plates are decorated with painted mottos.
