Description
Nos. 44, 46, and 48, known as Poacher's Cottage, is a former house that has been extended to form two dwellings. It dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with extensions added in the late 17th century and 19th century, and alterations made in the 20th century. The building has a timber frame, which has been extended with brick that is rendered and roughcast, and features a tiled roof.
The core of the structure is primarily the right section of No. 48 and possibly part of No. 46, which was extended to the left and rear in the 17th century. The building is two storeys high. No. 48 has two windows and a central projecting hipped entrance porch, with flanking two-light casements. Nos. 44 and 46, located to the right, have two windows with an entrance to the left of centre, ground floor two-light casements, and a blocked entrance that has been converted into a single-light casement. On the first floor, there is a horizontal sliding sash window to the left and a two-light casement to the right.
There is an original ridge stack situated between Nos. 46 and 48, a 19th-century stack at the left end, and an external stack at the right end of No. 46. At the rear of No. 48, there is a two-storey late 17th-century gabled wing featuring casements and exposed purlins, along with a catslide roof over French windows to the left. No. 46 has two gabled wings at the rear; the left wing is brick with cambered heads to the casements, while the right wing is weatherboarded timber frame with a 20th-century single-storey extension.
Inside No. 48, there is a ground floor stop-chamfered binding beam, jowled posts supporting a clasped purlin roof, windbraces, braces in the walling, and a frame for an original diamond mullioned window in the rear wall. The interior of No. 46 has not been inspected.
