Description

The Fisheries Cottage is an early 19th-century house, originally a fishing house associated with the now-demolished Chorleywood House. It has been altered, extended, and partly rebuilt in the 20th century. It is attributed to J.B. Papworth, who landscaped the grounds of Chorleywood House for J. Barnes. The house is constructed of stock brick and has a hipped slate roof. It is built in a Gothick Revival style and is one storey high with an attic.

The front of the house, which faces directly onto the River Chess, features a canted bay with Gothick glazing. It is flanked by round-arched niches with Gothick traceried seats, all set behind an ornate wrought iron verandah. The verandah railings display a pointed arch patterning, and the pointed arched heads of the five bays contain quatrefoil patterning. The roof has a fish-shaped weather vane. The left return side has a 2-light casement window set within a round headed reveal, and an inserted flat-topped dormer. A 19th-century door with a traceried oval light, moulded architrave, and two further round headed reveals framing sliding sash windows are found in a 20th-century rebuild of the rear portion. The right return side features a single-storey 20th-century addition with two dormers. A central stack is located at the front of the house.

Inside, the oval front room has a Gothick ribbed ceiling.
