Description

The Church of Saint Nicholas is a Grade I listed building dating from the 12th century, with the west tower and nave constructed around 1125. The church underwent several modifications, including the addition of aisles in the 13th century, around 1230, and the widening of these aisles. The chancel was rebuilt in the 14th century, circa 1330. In the 15th century, a clerestory was added to the nave, and the roofs of the nave and chancel were rebuilt, while the aisle arcades were reconstructed on existing columns. The church features towers and angle buttresses, with the spire's lead renewed in 1899.

The northeast vestry, south transept, and south porch were added in 1841, and the south aisle was enlarged between 1912 and 1914. Inside, there is an early 13th-century font, late 14th or early 15th-century choir stalls with misericords, and a restored 15th-century roof screen that is finely carved with foliated pinnacles and cusped ogee arches. Notable interior elements include a piscina and pedillia, a late 13th-century stone effigy of a lady with two attendants, a carved marble wall monument to Charles Gibbon from 1771, and a well-designed black and white marble wall monument to Turner from 1844.

The Church of Saint Nicholas, along with Moonhill and Dominic Cottage, forms a cohesive group.
