Description
Rooks Nest House (Howards) is a building from the 17th century or earlier that was refronted in the 18th century. The main structure is timber framed, with a front wall made of red brick featuring some grey headers. It has an old tiled roof with two gabled lattice casement dormers. The house is two storeys high with attics. On the first floor, there are three casement windows with glazing bars set under cambered arches, while the ground floor has one similar casement window, a French window on the left, and a canted bay window on the right. A large central chimneystack is prominent. Inside, there is a bressummer over a wide fireplace on the ground floor, and the timber framework is exposed in some rooms. The interior also features 18th-century fielded panelled doors. This house is noted for being the original setting in E. M. Forster's novel "Howards End," which describes its architecture and the surrounding countryside. Forster often visited this location. It is listed as Grade I for its historic interest and literary associations.
