Description
No. 31 High Street is a house built around 1500 as a small Wealden house, with a rear extension added around 1700. The front was converted into a shop in the early to mid-19th century. The building features roughcast on a timber frame and has a plain tile roof. It stands two storeys high with attics and includes two flush sash windows with vertical glazing bars. The door has a simple wooden frame and a shaped bracket hood, while the shop window is framed with pilasters. There is a circa 1600 red brick stack on the south gable end, which has two square shafts. The north gable end has a shallow two-storey lean-to addition, likely from the 19th century. At the rear, there are two projecting gable ends that display exposed thin framing. The first floor facing Waterend Lane features a well-preserved wooden cross bar casement window from around 1700, complete with original metal frames and square leading. Inside, the room behind retains bolection moulded panelling.
