Description
This is a public house located on Chequer Street. The main structure dates to the 16th century, with significant alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The front of the building is brick, while the rear section has a timber frame. It is two storeys high with an attic.
The front range has a ridge line running parallel to the street, and the rear range is at a right angle. The ground floor features a late 19th-century shop front with a tripartite arrangement, two plate glass windows, and transom lights with Chinese-style glazing bars. A 20th-century central door has been inserted. The shop front is topped by flat pilasters, shaped brackets, and a narrow fascia with a moulded cornice. The first floor has a shallow, canted bay set on a chamfered plinth with X-frame detailing. The windows are four-light plate glass casements with Chinese-style glazing bars to the upper lights. The roof is tiled, and a raised brick cartouche with raised lettering reading "The Bat and Ball" is visible. The gable parapet is swept and rounded, with bullnose brick coping. A two-light dormer has a tile-hung gable.
Inside, the original timber frame is visible on the ground floor’s external side elevation, with remnants of the original ground sill and posts. Elements include a moulded frame and a four-centred arch to the door. There are remains of the original upper jettied construction, with curved wind braces in the front frames and floor structures, as well as green post roof trusses. The building was once built together with the adjacent number 12 Chequer Street.
