Description
This is a house built in 1900. It is a long, irregular building with one and two storeys, notable for its arrangement of six strongly-curved Dutch gables, with the right-hand gable curved on its inner edge. The exterior is red brick with terra-cotta tile detailing, and has a moderately low-pitched slate roof. All windows are casement windows with T-shaped wood mullions and transoms, set within segmental arches constructed of gauged red brick. These arches are finished with keystones shaped like square urns featuring raised covers and ball finials, and have stone cills. Terra-cotta panels are present in the gables, some bearing the monogram "N & C". Flat buttresses separate the gabled sections, and a brick plinth runs along the base.
The decorative doorcase is constructed of gingerbread-coloured glazed tile, topped by a serpentine, scrolled open pediment. This is supported by a break-front cornice on consoles, which rest on modified Corinthian capitals decorated with green and cream tiles. Floral patterns in green and cream tile also adorn the panelled pilasters beneath the capitals and the spandrels of the round-arched door opening, which itself features a plain architrave and a scrolled keystone. Above the door is a cornice head with six sunk panels. A one-storey, one-window extension is attached to the left front of the building, including a secondary entrance. The property’s address has been revised from Sutton Street number 3 to Sutton Road number 3.
