Description
19 and 21 Holywell Hill are two former houses known as the "Saracen's Head." They date from the 16th century and were re-fronted around 1700. Each building has two storeys and two windows, featuring high-pitched tiled roofs with deep eaves cornices decorated with modillions. The fronts are plastered, and the first floor has sash windows with glazing bars set in near-flush, moulded frames. The ground floors are unified by a series of shop fronts that are a reproduction from the early 19th century, complete with a dentilled cornice, triglyphs in the fascia, and Tuscan pilasters on the sides with attached columns in the center. To the left of No 21, there is a carriageway with old timber work and some weatherboarding. Both houses have gabled rear extensions that appear to be from the 17th century. Nos 1 to 25 (odd) form a group.
