Description
The White Hart is a late 15th century range of timber-framed buildings located on Holywell Hill, alongside No 23 and No 25. The structure features two storeys and an attic, with two windows on the front. It has a high-pitched, tiled roof that includes a gabled dormer and a deep overhang above the first-floor window. The front is plastered and has a rusticated quoin on the left side. The first-floor windows are sash windows set in slightly projecting moulded frames, while the ground floor has a neo-classical reproduction shop front.
The main block, shared with No 25, also has two storeys and an attic, with three windows. It showcases fairly close studded timber framing with thin scantlings and tension braces, much of which has been restored. The high-pitched, tiled roof features three gabled dormers, and the walls are filled with plaster. The windows on this block include 4-light wood mullioned and transomed casement windows, although the casements are modern. A later addition includes a stone-coped brick plinth and a recessed central door under a Tudor arch.
The left-hand section, which extends over a carriageway, has two storeys and one window, with a jettied first floor and attic level. This section features close studded, thick timbers on the first floor and a canted bay window with mullions and transoms. The roof of this section is continuous with that of No 23. There is also a rear extension with a high-pitched, hipped, tiled roof. The buildings from Nos 1 to 25 form a cohesive group.
