Description
Nos 4 to 8 on Watling Street are a terrace of 18th century cottages that were restored in the early 19th century. The cottages are constructed of red brick and feature a low-pitched slate roof with an eaves soffit.
No 4 has two storeys and five windows. It showcases gauged, segmental brick arches over sash windows that have glazing bars in flush, box frames. The door is adorned with a panelled cornice hood supported by curved brackets, a cornice head, and a decorative fanlight. The right-hand bay appears to be a reproduction.
No 6 also has two storeys and two windows, featuring the same design elements as No 4, but it has an earlier 19th-century door.
No 8 is irregular in shape and has two mid-19th century windows on the first floor to the left, which have stone cills and margin lights beneath gauged brick arches. There is one similar window on the ground floor. The centre window on the first floor is a three-light 19th-century casement under a heavy inserted red brick arch with a keystone and ovolo moulding above. The door below has a heavy cornice hood on curved brackets. The right-hand windows on both the first and ground floors are recessed sashes with glazing bars in box frames, also under gauged, segmental brick arches, and feature inserted stone cills.
Nos 4 to 8 form a group.
