Description

The building is a former Unitarian Chapel, also known as the Old Presbyterian Chapel, dating from 1697. Constructed of brick, it has been cement rendered and colour-washed, and is topped with a hipped tiled roof. The two-storey structure has three casement windows with glazing bars, and features an eaves cornice. A surround is present around the doorway on the left side. This is an important early Nonconformist chapel, associated with prominent Presbyterians and Unitarians during the 18th century. From the mid-1890s to 1903, the chapel served as the premises of Samuel Ryder, whose penny-packet seed business operated from here before relocating to Holywell Hill, where he constructed new offices in 1911. The building is graded for group value and forms part of a group with numbers 3-11 (odd) and numbers 13 and 15.
