Description
Harpenden Lodge is a house believed to have been built in 1803 for General Haddon. It is constructed of red brick and features a slate hipped roof. The building has two storeys and attics, with five sash windows, the upper ones equipped with slatted shutters. On the ground floor, there is a late 19th-century glazed verandah on the left side. The central doorway within the verandah has a moulded round arch and deep reveals, while a moulded brick cornice and parapet adorn the top of the structure. The house includes three flat-topped casement dormers, and both the side and rear elevations feature a brick modillioned cornice. The rear elevation has a single-storey semicircular bay on the left side with three French casements. The south elevation has a large single-storey later extension, and there is a late 19th-century addition on the north side. Inside, the property retains a simple contemporary open-well staircase that is illuminated by an oval skylight in the ceiling of the hall, with some rooms featuring contemporary cornicing.
