Description
Skynner's Almshouses consist of two long ranges of 17th century brick almshouses, with the brickwork primarily made up of stretcher courses and largely restored. The buildings are dated 1670 and 1698. The roofs over the single storey sections are steeply tiled and feature eight rectangular chimney stacks, which have also been much restored. Each range has pairs of simple Tudor doors that separate stretches of four windows in one range and two windows in the other, all of which are diamond-leaded casements with two or three lights. A low brick wall encloses a narrow garden in front of the ranges, with each section accessed through a tall brick entrance gate. Each gateway includes a sunken stone panel engraved with a record of the charitable gift. The Entrance Court Wall and gateways to Nos 68 to 88 form a cohesive group with the almshouses.
