Description
The Clock House is a stable block that was originally part of Tatmore Place, now converted into a house. It was built in 1908 by John Belcher for Sir Joseph Child Priestley. The structure features uncoursed knapped flint with red brick bands and dressings. It has steep pitched roofs made of graduated slates, which are half-hipped on the wings. Some windows are made of painted stone and have mullions.
At the center, there is a lead-covered square clock turret with a swept roof, a ball finial, and a wrought iron vane. The building is U-shaped, with the open side facing west. The main range is a tall single-storey rectangular structure, flanked by two two-storey wings that project to the west. The northern wing is designed as a stable cottage, facing south into the courtyard, and features a three-light window above a round-headed arched opening that now has an inserted six-panel door.
The west gable end has a four-light mullioned window on each floor. The north side includes a tall round-arched brick opening with a key-block and a large projecting chimney that incorporates two small two-light windows. The south wing has an upper floor door on its west gable, with beam sockets indicating the location of a former external stair. There is a hipped-roof canopy supported by heavy brackets, and a plank door with a glazed light in the upper part. The roof of the south side of the wing extends down as an outshut, while the north side features large double doors leading to the courtyard for carriages.
