Description
The Manse is an early 19th-century house located on the east side of Barkway High Street. Constructed of red brick with a slate roof, it features a 3-bay, 1-bay layout with a lobby entrance. The house is two storeys high and has a high rendered plinth. A central staircase leads to the entrance, which has a half-glazed door within a doorcase detailed with roundels at the angles and a flat hood. Recessed glazing bar sashes are set within gauged brick flat arched heads; a blind opening is situated above the entrance. The right bay is set back slightly and contains a bricked-up second entrance. Boxed eaves are present, and a ridge stack is located behind the entrance, with a later extruded stack at the right end. The right gable is weatherboarded. The roof sweeps down over the lower upper storey to the rear. Internally, the house has not been inspected. From 1884, The Manse served as the manse for the adjacent Congregational Chapel and is included on the list for group value.
