Description

Number 14 and the Parish Hall are a late 17th-century house with an attached former reading room, altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The house is timber-framed and rendered with decorative pargeting, and has a thatched roof. It comprises two main sections and has a first floor and attic. The central entrance is accessed by steps with iron railings leading to a 6-panel door with a lintel bearing the date 1692. The house has a plinth and three small-paned casement windows within flush moulded frames. There are two tall gabled dormers in the roof. A rebuilt 19th-century external stack is located on the left side, with two diagonally set shafts. Originally, a similar, larger stack with three diagonally set shafts stood on the right end. To the right is a former reading room, constructed around 1870 and gifted by the Hon. Mrs. V. Harcourt. It is built of red brick with black brick diapering, and has a slate roof. The front gable has a plinth, an 8-light mullion and transom casement, a hood mould, quoining, and bargeboards. The right return has a front entrance with a plank door in a gabled porch with a depressed gauged brick arch, and a 4-light mullioned casement with a hood mould towards the rear. The interior of Number 14 features stop-chamfered cross axial bearers with run-out stops, an ovolo moulded axial bearer, and jowled posts supporting a clasped purlin roof. Modern additions to the rear are not considered to be of particular architectural interest.
