Description

This is a range of 17th-century houses located on Hitchin Street. The houses have been rendered with stucco and are covered by a steeply pitched tiled roof. A cross gable is visible on the left side, and there are two large, restored 17th-century chimney stacks, one of which features an arched panel. The ground floors have been partially refaced with brick. The building incorporates 19th-century and modern shop fronts. The first floor has eight windows, consisting of 19th-century sash windows and two triple-light leaded casements. Some remnants of channelled pargetting (decorative plasterwork) and exposed corbels are visible. Historical records suggest the presence of 17th-century panelling within the building. Numbers 1, 1B, 3, and 5 form part of a larger group of buildings with numbers 7, 17, 19, 23 to 31 (odd), 31A, 33, 33A, 35 and 43 to 57 (odd).
