Description
The Settlement is a building constructed between 1906 and 1907 by B Parker and R Unwin. Originally named "The Skittles Inn," it was a temperance inn that included living accommodation. Since 1925, it has been used as an Adult Education Centre. The building is one and a half storeys tall, featuring a north front with two large gabled bays. It has tiled roofs with dormers and walls that showcase exposed studwork with a roughcast finish. The first floor has mullioned windows with casements that include glazing bars, while the ground floor windows have leaded lights. Tile labels adorn the windows. The roof eaves extend over deep verandahs, or 'stoeps,' which have fitted seats. Inside, the layout is interesting, with a billiard room that has an open trussed roof and an inglenook. The entrance hall still retains the original bar counter, which was designed for the sale of temperance beverages.
