Description

The Booking Hall, Public Rooms, Offices, and footbridge at Letchworth Station is a building from 1912, designed in the Arts and Crafts style. This former Great Northern Station replaced a temporary station built in 1904. It is one and a half storeys tall with a symmetrical front featuring a recessed entrance situated between splayed bays. The building has a tiled roof with red brick stacks that have moulded caps. The walls are made of red brick, adorned with an eaves cornice and a half-timbered gable with brick nogging at the south-west end. Above the entrance, there is a flat-topped, 6-light dormer. The recessed sash windows are topped with gauged segmental brick arches, and the entrance to the booking hall is segmental-arched and sheltered by a wooden canopy. There is an adjacent entrance porch to the office, which has an architraved doorway and a battlemented parapet. Bay windows flank the entrance, featuring a panelled parapet topped with decorative balls. The footbridge includes lifts designed as towers with pyramidical roofs. Inside, the two-storey booking hall is decorated in an Art Nouveau style, showcasing exposed timber work.
