Description

STATION PLACE 1. 5255 Booking Hall, Public Rooms, Offices and footbridge at Letchworth Station TL 2132 8/146 II 2. 1912. This former Great Northern Station replaced a temporary station built in 1904. Arts and Crafts manner. One and a half storeys. Symmetrical front with recessed entrance between splayed bays. Tiled roof with red brick stacks with moulded caps. Red brick walls with eaves cornice and half-timbered gable with brick nogging at south-west end. Flat-topped, 6-light dormer over entrance. Gauged segmental brick arches to recessed sash windows. Segmental-arched entrance to booking hall below wooden canopy. Adjacent entrance porch to office with architraved doorway and battlemented parapet. Bay windows flanking entrance with panelled parapet surmounted by balls. Lifts on footbridge in the form of towers with pyramidical roofs. Two storey booking hall decorated in Art Nouveau manner with exposed timber work.
